New COVID-19 cases plunge in Florida
Florida reported that there were far fewer cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, adding 39,683 new cases. This is a 11.2% reduction from the previous week’s aggregate of 44,668 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Florida was ranked 9th among the states in which the coronavirus spreads fastest per capita, according to a USA TODAY NETWORK analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. Last week, cases of coronavirus in the United States decreased by 13.8% from the previous week, and 407,147 cases were reported. With 6.45% of the country’s population, Florida had 9.75% of the country’s case last week. Nationwide, 11 states had more cases in the most recent week than in the previous week.
Throughout Florida, cases decreased in 43 counties, the most in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Orange County.
Leon County reported 290 cases and two deaths last week. A week ago, 282 cases and 2 deaths were reported. Throughout the pandemic, the county reported 31,247 cases and 311 deaths.
Gadsden County reported 25 cases and 0 deaths last week. A week ago, it reported 32 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic, the county reported 5,621 cases and 93 deaths.
Wakulla County reported 38 cases and 0 deaths last week. A week ago, 53 and -1 deaths were reported. Throughout the pandemic, the county reported 3,381 cases and 54 deaths.
Jefferson County reported 18 cases and 0 deaths last week. A week ago, it reported 19 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic, the county reported 1,473 cases and 27 deaths.
Franklin County reported two cases and zero deaths last week. A week ago, 6 and -1 deaths were reported. Throughout the pandemic, the county reported 1,309 cases and 17 deaths.

Florida ranks 29th in the state, with at least one vaccination, and 40.2% of its population has been vaccinated at least partially. The national percentage is 42.2%, as shown by USA TODAY analysis of CDC data. The most used Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in the United States should be given twice at intervals of several weeks.
In the week ending Sunday, Florida reported an additional 1,065,346 vaccinations, including 436,704 initial doses. Last week, the state received 1,485,190 vaccinations, including 833,696 initial doses. In total, Florida reported that it administered a total dose of 14,462,795.
Within Florida, the worst weekly outbreaks per capita occurred in the Miami-Dade, Osceola, and Broward counties. Overall, the newest case was added in Miami-Dade County, with 7,992 cases. Broward County, 4,663 cases. Hillsborough County has 3,126 people. Weekly cases increased in 22 counties from the previous week. The worst increase from last week’s pace was in the Breverd, Alachua and Marion counties.
In Florida, 409 people were reported dead from COVID-19 during the week ending Sunday. The week before that, 418 people were reported dead.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, a total of 2,208,584 people have been coronavirus-positive and 34,848 have died from the disease, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, 32,077,178 are positive and 572,200 are dead.
