Thousands march in Montreal against COVID restrictions
Tens of thousands of protesters marched at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal on Saturday, rallying against restrictions imposed by the government to stop the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic in Canada.
Some demonstrators were arrested at the beginning of the march, and there were signs in the crowd against masks, curfew, and health passports, according to AFP journalists.
The event proceeded in a festive atmosphere to the rhythm of the drums, but the heavy police presence was at hand.
Police refused to provide a crowd quote, but Canadian media said turnout was around 30,000, making it the largest rally for COVID restrictions in Quebec in recent months.
Protesters said the restrictions imposed by the Quebec government were “injustice,” saying that they were mostly obscured and ignored the rules of social distance.
They criticized the compulsory masking for outdoor rallies and the curfew imposed at the beginning of January. This is a move not seen on a state scale in Canada since the outbreak of the Spanish flu a century ago.
The Quebec government said the curfew in Montreal would be postponed from 8 pm to 9:30 pm starting Monday due to lower infection rates.
“We just want the end of health care,” Daniel Pilon, who told him he was the organizer of the event, told AFP.
“Collateral damage (for health measures) is far greater than collateral damage caused by COVID,” he added, adding that suicide and bankruptcy are on the rise.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the protest was “extremely disappointing.”
“The irony here is that people are gathering together, endangering each other, spreading more cases of COVID-19, and extending the time they have to face restrictions and public health measures,” he said. It was.
The Olympic Stadium in Montreal is one of the country’s largest vaccination sites and had to be closed on Saturday for demonstrations.
Canada has recorded more than 1.2 million cases of coronavirus and 24,200 deaths, more than half of which occur in Ontario and Quebec. -French media agency
