University of Maryland School of Medicine Launches Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine Research for 12-17 Years – CBS Baltimore
Baltimore (WJZ) — This week, the University of Maryland School of Medicine began expanding clinical trials of the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine in teenagers aged 12 to 17 years.
The clinical trial began just as the US Food and Drug Administration announced that it would extend the emergency use authorization for the Pfizer vaccine to age 12 and older. However, like adult vaccines, multiple pediatricians are needed to fully vaccinate children and teens around the world.

The expansion of the PREVENT-19 study will assess the safety, efficacy and immunity of the Novavax vaccine. Clinical trials include participants aged 12 to 17 found at 75 sites across the United States.

Participants will receive a random Novavax vaccine or placebo in two doses every 21 days. Two-thirds of the group receive the vaccine and one-third receive the placebo. Participants will be monitored for up to 2 years after receiving the second dose.

A blind crossover will be conducted later in the study to ensure that all participants receive the active vaccine.
