Li says the cost of adding electronic safety systems to the model ultimately gives buyers a three- or four-star rating (rather than the full five) in exchange for a lower price.

Li also ended months of speculation by confirming to Auto Express that the next Seagull will be built in right-hand drive, with an eye on the UK market. We know it will likely hit showrooms here in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Plans to bring the next-generation Seagull to Europe are part of BYD's wider strategy to expand well beyond its current Chinese manufacturing base. We are currently building a factory in Brazil, and recently announced plans to build a factory in Hungary as well. Li suggested additional manufacturing facilities would be added quickly, including potentially in European locations.

Li said the company would announce three to four more manufacturing plants globally before the end of the year. They may be located in central or southern Mexico to focus primarily on the Mexican market. The other two are in other regions. In Europe, one facility may not be enough.

Li said no decision has yet been made on where the second European site will be based. When asked directly whether BYD was discussing with the Italian government to open a factory there, as she had rumored earlier this spring, she said not yet. It's not likely to happen just in Italy.
