After Rishi Sunak announced the election date late this afternoon, Deputy Opposition Leader Holly Lynch announced she would resign at the next election.

This figure is higher than recent elections in 2019 (74th), 2017 (31st) and 2015 (90th), but much lower than in 2010, when 149 people resigned. Most of those who have resigned are Conservatives, with 65 Tories never standing again.

There are 20 Labor Party members, and a total of 9 SNP and Independent members.

This is similar to 2010 and 1997. The majority of lawmakers who resigned were from the ruling party, which faced dismal opinion polls after a long period in power.

That number may rise in the coming days as lawmakers who had been delaying a decision decide not to stand again.
