Gray clouds, wet weather and severe thunderstorms will dampen the bank holiday weekend for many, with a yellow warning in place from midday on Sunday.

Saturday will remain mostly dry and bright, with temperatures rising to 22C in London and south-east England, but the late May Bank Holiday could end in a storm with scattered, heavy and thunderous downpours predicted by the Met Office.

A week ago, forecasters predicted a mini-heatwave across the UK over the bank holiday weekend, with highs reaching 30C in south-east England.

But those expectations seem to have cooled with the weather. People heading to the Birmingham Pride festival on Sunday will have to endure frequent rain and heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds that are increasing by the day.

Conditions are expected to worsen across most of the UK on Saturday night, starting with Cornwall and East Anglia, with persistent rain expected to fall across the country.

Showers are expected to be frequent on Sunday morning, with the Met Office warning that up to 40mm of rain could fall.

If this week's rainfall falls where the ground is already well saturated, you could see localized impacts and possibly a bit of spray on the roads, so be especially careful when heading out into Sunday, Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth said.

A yellow thunderstorm warning will last until Sunday evening and cover large areas of northern England and Wales. Hail and lightning may occur frequently. Floods, power outages, and travel disruptions may also occur.

Monday will feel cooler and brisker with both north-west England and south-west Scotland expected to see scattered showers. Drier weather is expected in the afternoon in Wales, Northern Ireland and south-west England, but thunderous downpours are expected in eastern England.

More wet weather is expected during the half-term, when many families are scheduled to take a week-long holiday.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said: Overall, the situation is quite mixed. Saturday is probably the best day. There will still be some sunshine on Sunday and Monday. But it's definitely better to avoid heavy rain.

Watch out for thunderstorms, especially in northern and central England and northeast Wales.
