Successful golfers missed the cut line at Pinehurst – NBC 6 South Florida

The 2024 US Open kicked off with 156 golfers competing for a major championship and a huge first place finish in Pinehurst, North Carolina. But there are less than half of this starting field left for the weekend.

Dozens of deletions were made after Friday's second round on the No. 2 course at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. The deletions included six former US Open champions, headlined by 15-time major winner Tiger Woods.

The second round saw a change at the top of the leaderboard as Ludvig Berg now sits in the field at 5 under. Berg, 24, who is seeking his first major title, shot a 6-under 69 in the second round to claim first place alone.

Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy shared the lead at 5 under through one round and both remain very close to the top of the leaderboard. Cantlay is tied for second at 4 under with Bryson DeChambeau and Thomas Detry while McIlroy is tied for fifth at 3 under with Tony Finau and Matthieu Pavon.

Hideki Matsuyama jumped to eighth place after shooting a best score of 4-under 66.

Meanwhile, defending tournament champion Wyndham Clark is well off the lead at 4-over.

Who missed the 2024 US Open cut?

Several big names saw their US Open end prematurely. Max Homa and Viktor Hovland both finished just outside the cut line at 6-over.

Tiger Woods, who shot 7-over, was one of six former US Open champions to miss the cut, along with Justin Rose (6-over), Webb Simpson (8-over), Dustin Johnson (9- over), Gary Woodland. (over 10) and Lucas Glover (over 13).

Other notable deletions included Will Zalatoris (over 8), Rickie Fowler (over 8), and Phil Mickelson (over 15).
