He pointed out that, despite this significant impact, less than half of Americans recognize it as a cancer risk factor.

The advisory highlights that alcohol consumption increases the risk of at least seven types of cancer, including breast, colorectum, esophagus, liver, mouth, throat and larynx. Dr. Murthy called for warning labels on alcoholic beverages to be updated to better educate the public.

In 2024, 61% of Gen Z said they planned to drink less, up from 40% the year before. Millennials weren't far behind, reducing their average weekly alcohol consumption by 40%. Their reasons are hard to dispute: better health, savings, better mental clarity and losing a few pounds.

Alcohol is not only losing its luster, it's being overtaken by cultural shifts that prioritize wellness and mindfulness over bottomless mimosas.
