Starmer defended his record as a prosecutor after tech billionaire Musk attacked him and other Labor figures over their handling of child sex abuse cases.

Following days of hostile attacks from Elon Musk over historic child sex abuse crimes in northern England, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has defended his record and condemned those spreading lies.

Starmer said on Monday that those who spread lies and misinformation as far as possible don't care about the victims, they care about themselves, without mentioning American billionaire Musk by name.

He was speaking at a National Health Service event in Surrey, England, answering questions about Musk's recent attacks on his handling of child sexual assault cases.

Musk has recently attacked himself and other Labor figures over the issue, focusing on a historic scandal involving a pedophile grooming gang that first emerged while Starmus was director of public prosecutions.

Musk's tirade, which included calls for a new public inquiry into the scandal, prompted some British opposition politicians to join in the criticism and call for a new national inquiry.

We have seen this playbook of intimidation and threats of violence time and time again, and he hopes the media will amplify it, Starmer said.

The Prime Minister stressed that his Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips had received serious threats. In a post on his social media platform X last week, Musk described her as an advocate of rape and genocide.

Starmer said he was making a more general argument rather than directly addressing Musk's comments, adding that in my book a line has been crossed when the venom of the far right leads to a serious threat to Jess Phillips and others.

I love the strong momentum in politics, the strong debate we need to have, but it has to be based on facts and truth, not lies, he added.

The issue has long been addressed by far-right figures, particularly the jailed Tommy Robinson, one of Britain's most prominent far-right provocateurs, whom Musk has praised.

In one of his X posts on Thursday, Musk claimed that Robinson was in prison for telling the truth and should be released.

A 2014 investigation found that at least 1,400 children were sexually exploited in Rotherham, northern England, between 1997 and 2013.

Musk appears to have taken a keen interest in the British political scene after the center-left Labor Party won a landslide election victory in July 2024, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.
