Britain has enough gas and electricity to meet demand this winter, the government has insisted after the owner of Britain's largest gas outlet said levels had fallen significantly due to the current cold spell.

Centrica, which owns British Gas, said on Friday its inventories had halved since early November and were a quarter of what they were at the same time last year when temperatures were warmer than usual. It dropped to level 1.

We are in regular dialogue with the National Energy System Operator to monitor energy security and ensure that all the tools necessary to secure supply are available where necessary, a No 10 spokesperson said.
