10th place says UK has sufficient energy supplies despite low gas storage levels | energy industry
Britain has enough gas and electricity to meet demand this winter, the government has insisted after the owner of Britain's largest gas outlet said levels had fallen significantly due to the current cold spell.
Centrica, which owns British Gas, said on Friday its inventories had halved since early November and were a quarter of what they were at the same time last year when temperatures were warmer than usual. It dropped to level 1.
The company blamed less than a week of gas decline. The total storage will equate to an average of 12 days of gas use at the initial launch, following a colder-than-usual winter across the UK and higher prices in global wholesale markets.
A No 10 spokesperson said: We are confident that our diverse and resilient energy system will ensure we have sufficient gas supplies and electricity capacity to meet demand this winter.
The UK has one of the lowest gas storage levels in Europe. Instead, it relies on remaining reserves in the North Sea, along with importing most of its gas by pipeline from Norway. The UK also imports liquefied natural gas in tankers from countries including the US and Qatar.
We are in regular dialogue with the National Energy System Operator to monitor energy security and ensure that all the tools necessary to secure supply are available where necessary, a No 10 spokesperson said. Reports show the UK is on the brink of an energy blackout. That wasn't true earlier this week.
Doug Parr, head of policy at Greenpeace UK, said: We must be wary of Centricas' attempts to amplify concerns about gas storage. Britain has been dependent on European gas reserves. [via gas pipelines] Reasonably full store for many years.
The 10-second guarantee has not emerged just days after Britain's energy system operator had to pay around $17 million a day to ensure two gas-fired power plants did not switch off during periods of high electricity demand and low wind output.
The high-voltage cable, which supplies electricity from Denmark to the UK via Viking Link, has also agreed to temporarily return from a planned maintenance outage at a time of peak demand for an undisclosed sum.
Chris OShea, CEO of Centrica, said on Friday that as the UK transitions to a clean power system by the end of the decade, energy storage will become more necessary when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing.
Gas storage levels in the UK are quite low, he said. We are exceptional compared to the rest of Europe in the role of storage in our energy system and we are now seeing the implications.

The company reopened its rough gas storage facility in the North Sea following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The site became inaccessible five years ago when the government refused to provide financial support.
OShea said you should think of storage as a very valuable insurance policy. As with any insurance, it may not always be necessary, but having more capacity will help protect against worst-case scenarios.
The company hopes to expand its Rough site and is lobbying the government to allow the 2 billion project to access a financing model designed for long-term power storage schemes.
Greenpeace Parr said: Centrica is seeking taxpayer cash to expand its gas storage sites in East Yorkshire and we are pleased to use this moment to point out its advantages. Let's not panic.
