Storm Herminia brings heavy rain and 80mph winds after 'strongest' storm in 10 years | uk news

The Met Office added that Storm Éowyn was probably the strongest storm to hit Britain in at least a decade and, in the worst-hit areas, likely the worst in 20 to 30 years.

Falling trees killed at least two people, ripped off walls and roofs of buildings, and left more than a million people without power. On Sunday morning, more than 100,000 people were still without electricity in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

But the respite will be short-lived, as the Spanish-named Storm Herminia has already arrived right behind it and is moving southwest.

Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said: This will certainly be a notch lower than Eowyn, but generally gusts of 60-70mph are likely for areas further to the south-west, but we are unlikely to see the same intensity. The same winds we have seen over the past few days.

Forecasters have issued a yellow weather warning for winds covering most of Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and the west coast of England.

A yellow dust warning has also been issued for most of Wales, southern England, and the Midlands. This is expected to last until Monday or Tuesday with high speed winds passing through the south.

Although not as powerful as Éowyn, it is at greater risk of damage from a storm of that size because it can move across already damaged infrastructure.

Vautrey said: The threshold for wind intensity may be slightly lower at this stage after all the disruption and damage.

As Sunday rolls around and a new work week begins, there is a risk of localized flooding, more flying debris, travel disruptions, etc., so it's definitely something for people to be aware of and take precautions for. The result of all this.

The Duchy of Lancaster's Prime Minister Pat McFadden and Deputy First Minister Angela Rayner held talks with other government members and the First Ministers of Northern Ireland and Scotland at an emergency Cobra meeting on Saturday to prepare for the storm.

Scotland's First Minister John Swinney wrote on X (formerly Twitter) asking for patience while work is carried out to restore services affected by the storm.

Meanwhile, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband expressed condolences to those affected, including those who lost power, and said the government would work closely with partners until power is restored to everyone affected. said.

Parts of Ireland recorded the highest wind speeds since records began on Friday, reaching 114mph at Mace Head in Co Galway.

Wind gusts of 100mph were recorded that day at Drumalbin, South Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Kacper Dudek, 20, died when a tree fell on his car in Feddyglass, Raphoe, Co Donegal, on Friday morning, with Irish police investigating the incident.

A 19-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released, died when a tree fell on his blue Ford Focus while driving along the B743 in Mauchline, East Ayrshire, about 6.45am on Friday.

More than a million people in the UK were without power and there were severe travel disruptions across the UK and Ireland.

The Celtics' Scottish Premiership match against Dundee on Saturday has been canceled due to storm damage to the club's Glasgow Stadium.

Network Rail Scotland said more than 400 cases of damage had been identified as a result of the storm.

Signaling systems, overhead lines, stations, perimeter fences, level crossings and train depots were damaged, it added.

Numerous fallen trees were reported along all routes, as well as other debris, including roofs, found on the tracks in Glasgow.

Sunday brings a new set of weather warnings as Storm Herminia approaches.

Sky News meteorologist Dr Chris England said: “Spanish-named Storm Herminia will bring heavy rain, strong winds and snow to the south-west tomorrow and Monday.”

A storm warning has been issued for south-east, south-west and north-west England, Wales and south-west Scotland from 8am to 3pm on Sunday.

Widespread wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 70 mph on exposed coasts and hills, the National Weather Service said.

A yellow weather warning for strong and gusty winds has also been issued for the east, south-east and south-west of England and Wales between 6am on Monday and the same time on Tuesday.

Wind gusts near the coast could again be near 70 mph.

The Korea Meteorological Administration warned that 10 to 20 mm of rain would fall, with up to 30 to 50 mm of rain expected in the highlands.

This could increase to up to 80mm if more severe storms arrive on Sunday evening.

Following recent heavy rainfall, this additional rainfall could cause surface water and river flooding in some areas, the Met Office said.

Another amber warning for heavy rain is in place for most of the West Midlands and Wales from 6am to 11.59pm on Monday.

Police Scotland said on Friday they had responded to around 1,900 weather-related incidents linked to Storm Éowyn.

Some of ScotRails routes have reopened after suspending all services across Scotland.

More than 42,000 customers are without electricity in Scotland.

As of 4pm on Saturday, around 28,000 Scottish Power customers were without power, and as of 4.30pm, around 14,500 Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) customers were without power.

SSEN said it had restored power to around 75,300 customers and Scottish Power around 192,000 who were all cut off by the storm.

Scottish Power has received 52,000 calls since Storm Eowyn recorded a month's worth of calls each day.

He said storm damage means it could take days to restore power.

NIE Networks said 189,000 homes and businesses were still without power in Northern Ireland on Saturday. It was restored for 96,000 customers, he added.
