One of the highlights of the motorsport calendar, the Indy 500 is here and you can watch it all on Sky Sports.

The unique format will see practice taking place this week ahead of a six-hour weekend of qualifying on Saturday, followed by a thrilling shootout for pole position on Sunday evening.

IndyCar championship leader Alex Palou will aim to defend his title in a race often unpredictable and known as “the greatest spectacle in racing,” thanks to the courage of 33 drivers going wheel-to-wheel at speeds exceeding 200 mph on a 2.5-mile oval.

Ahead of Formula 1’s Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday May 24, you can watch all sessions live on Sky Sports, including coverage of the race itself.

Indy 500 weather

Practice weather this week is dry, with a chance of rain for Saturday’s six-hour qualifying, but Sunday’s qualifying, which will decide the polesitter, is expected to be dry.

The long-term outlook for the 110th edition of the Indy 500 itself on Sunday, May 24 is currently expected to be dull.

As Colton Herta showed in last year’s Indy 500 schedule qualifying on Sky Sports F1, the two weeks leading up to the Indy 500 usually feature major crashes.

Each driver is guaranteed at least one run in Saturday’s six-hour qualifying round following a random draw. In that run, drivers do an out lap, a warm-up lap, and then complete four consecutive flying laps, and the average speed of that run is what counts.

Afterwards, when the weather is dry, drivers can improve their average speeds to move up the order. To do this, teams move their cars to lane 1 or lane 2.

Lane 1 is the priority lane, so all drivers in that lane will drive into the next lane, but they risk being knocked off their turn as their top speeds are erased. The driver in lane 2 will maintain and not lose his best time even if he slows down on his next run.

Positions 13-33 are fixed, but the top 12 will advance to Sunday’s qualifying shootout, which will see the top 12 complete a point in reverse order of Saturday’s rankings.

The top six finishers in this event advance to the pole position shootout, where one more run will determine the final grid for the Indy 500.

With only 33 drivers competing in this year’s event, there will be no “bump” qualifying session for the first time since 2022. If there are more than 33 drivers, a shootout is held to determine if the slowest driver is ineligible for the Indy 500.
