Hegseth says Pentagon will review Mark Kelly’s remarks on US weapons stockpiles | American military

Pete Hegseth said he referred Sen. Mark Kelly to Pentagon lawyers for allegedly leaking classified information about depleted U.S. weapons stockpiles — information Kelly says he heard from the defense secretary, in public, under oath.

Speaking on CBS News’ Face the Nation on Sunday, Kelly said U.S. stockpiles of Tomahawk cruise missiles, Army tactical missile systems, SM-3 interceptors, Thaad shells and Patriot missiles had been significantly reduced during the Iranian conflict, warning that resupply could take years and expose the United States to any future confrontation with China.

Hegseth responded on

“Now he is talking on TV (falsely and stupidly) about a *CLASSIFIED* Pentagon briefing he received,” Hegseth wrote on social media. “Did he break his oath…again?” »

Kelly then countered that the information did not come from a classified press briefing, but rather from Hegseth’s own mouth during a Senate briefing in late April about the future Pentagon budget and the war with Iran.

“This is unclassified, this is a quote from you,” Kelly wrote. “This war comes at a very high cost and you and the president still have not explained to the American people what the objective is.”

The exchange did take place between the two men on April 30 during the open hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee, during which Kelly directly asked Hegseth: “How many years will it take to replenish our munitions following Trump’s war in Iran?”

“Months and years,” Hegseth replied. “Fast.”

The confrontation is the latest in a dispute between the two men that dates back to last fall, when Kelly joined five fellow Democratic lawmakers — all veterans or former intelligence officials — in a video reminding military personnel that they are legally required to refuse illegal orders. Other attendees included Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan and Reps. Chris Deluzio, Chrissy Houlahan, Maggie Goodlander and Jason Crow.

Hegseth responded by formally censuring Kelly, opening a Pentagon investigation and seeking to strip him of his retired captain’s rank under a federal law that allows retired military personnel to be recalled for possible court-martial.

But a federal court temporarily blocked both actions, ruling that the Pentagon had likely violated Kelly’s First Amendment rights and those of millions of retired military personnel. Hegseth appealed, and last week a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Washington, D.C. Circuit heard oral arguments, showing little receptiveness to the government’s position.

Donald Trump had called the six lawmakers traitors who committed sedition and suggested they be executed, a comment he later tried to retract. A few days later, Slotkin, a former CIA officer, received a bomb threat.

The Justice Department separately opened a criminal investigation into the video, and a grand jury declined to bring charges in February.

The Pentagon declined to answer the scope of its legal review, its implications and whether the investigation had already begun.
