The King’s Speech on Building a Stronger and Fairer Britain
The King’s Speech will strengthen public services, reform the state and reverse decline An ambitious program to break the status quo New laws reflect the big challenges facing the country and strengthen the UK’s economy, energy and national security
A stronger, fairer nation that can weather the storm of global shock and restore hope will be the focus of new legislation set out in the King’s speech today. [13 May].
The current Government’s second King’s Speech is expected to unveil more than 35 bills and draft legislation that tackle the great challenges facing our country and set the country on a stronger, fairer path that opens hope for people across the country.
The package of bills aims to strengthen the UK’s foundations through measures to strengthen the economy, energy and national security.
This includes legislation to reform the state to restore order and control to the immigration system, strengthen public services and support a more proactive government on the side of the British people.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:
“The British people expect the Government to continue its work of changing our country for the better.
“It’s about reducing the cost of living, reducing hospital waiting lists and keeping our country safe in an increasingly dangerous world.
“The UK stands at a pivotal moment: either move forward with plans to build a stronger, fairer nation, or return to the chaos and instability of the past.
“Our government will deliver on its promise of change for the British people.”
The government’s first sitting of Parliament saw the passage of 50 government bills, including the Child Welfare Act, Employment Rights Act, UK Energy Act, Tenants’ Rights Act and Planning and Infrastructure Act.
This Bill delivers on a key promise we made to the British public: to make the UK safer, stronger and fairer, through transformative, landmark legislation. This includes supporting everyday school fees for parents, strengthening the rights of victims and survivors, creating the first smoke-free generation to help people live healthier lives, strengthening police powers to crack down on anti-social behavior and giving communities a say in decisions that affect them.
This second session will bring change to our community.
Economy, Energy and National Security
The world today is more unstable and dangerous than at any point in recent history. War on two fronts in the Middle East and Ukraine threatens living standards. The Government’s economic plans have put the UK in a better position to weather this storm. We will rebuild our economy to be more resilient, and the King’s Speech will drive this progress through more protection for small and medium-sized businesses, regulatory reform to drive growth and innovation, and changes to give businesses the confidence to invest and grow. The new legislation, which delivers on the Government’s commitment to improve the UK’s trade and investment relationship with the EU, will help provide more trade and more opportunities for young people and reduce the cost of living.
We need to break away from the fossil fuel roller coaster with clean, home-grown electricity that we control and the electrification of the wider economy. The King’s speech is expected to unveil the Energy Independence Bill, which would give the government more powers to tackle the affordability crisis and accelerate the delivery of clean energy technologies and essential grid infrastructure.
Building on the progress already made to restore order and control at our borders, legislation will be introduced to restore control and provide a robust, fair immigration system that earns public trust.
Legislation will also be introduced to help the UK tackle the evolving threats it faces head-on, strengthen its defenses and keep pace with modern technology – from cyber-attacks to new powers to counter national threats – to better tackle the sharing of extremist content online.
As the Prime Minister revealed earlier this week, the King’s speech will also set out legislation to protect Britain’s steel production capacity by giving the government an option to nationalize British steel. This will allow us to take the necessary steps where necessary while we continue to rebuild our steel sector.
End of opportunity crisis
Ending the opportunity crisis requires a proactive nation that can deliver on its government’s commitment to fight for every child. The King’s speech is expected to include legislation to deliver landmark reforms for the government to transform the school system to ensure every child has access to a comprehensive, high-quality mainstream education and parents do not have to fight the system to give their children the support they deserve.
Removing barriers to opportunity and helping people get on with their lives is at the heart of the government’s efforts to reverse the decline felt across the country. Delivering a pledge to end the unfair and outdated rental system, the bill will give people more control over how they live in their homes and provide stronger rights for homeowners.
Strengthening public services and reforming the country
Groundbreaking public service reforms in the NHS, police and special education will also strengthen our country. This government is built to reverse the decline and neglect of the NHS, support people at every stage of their lives and prevent disease in the first place. New legislation is expected to be introduced to accelerate reforms needed to cut bureaucracy, improve patient care and support early intervention. It will also include legislation to protect much-needed social housing stock and better protect survivors of domestic violence, ensuring families can live in safe, affordable and affordable homes.
The new legislation comes as the government moves to ease the cost-of-living crisis for workers, remove barriers to growth, create more good-paying jobs and give people the skills and pathways to move forward in life. This includes opening free breakfast clubs, giving parents free childcare, freezing rail fares, capping bus fares and fixing our broken welfare system by tackling the disincentives that leave too many people out of work and investing £2.5 billion in a youth employment package that will help support around one million young people and provide up to 500,000 earning and learning opportunities.
