In memory of Ryamizard Ryacudu, Jokowi was appointed Minister of Defense and then replaced by Prabowo Subianto
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Military personality, former Minister of Defense and former Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army (KSAD), General (Purn) Ryamizard Ryacudu died on Sunday (31/5/2026) at RSPAD. Ryamizard occupies a unique role and position at the end of President Joko Widodo’s first term. For what? Because he was appointed Minister of Defense by Jokowi and replaced by Prabowo Subianto, who became president after Jokowi.
Ryamizard is known as a general close to the PDI Perjuangan. He supports the candidacy of 2012-2017 DKI Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo for the 2014 presidential election. When asked why he supports Jokowi, here is Ryamizard’s response at the Jokowi-JK volunteers briefing, Surabaya, Friday (4/7/2013) evening, Ryamizard said that he supports the presidential candidate (capres) of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Joko Widodo (Jokowi)-Jusuf Kalla (JK) because of the figure of PDIP General Chairman Megawati Soekarnoputri, which he considers clean.
“Ms. Megawati is honest, honest and (implements) true democracy. Coincidentally, Ms. Mega’s father (Soekarno) was also close to my parents,” he said.
Apart from that, he added, a leader has the task of uniting those he leads. The second task is to improve the well-being of those who are led. These criteria and evaluations led Ryamizard to decide to support Jokowi to become president for the 2014-2019 period.
Ryamizard was Minister of Defense for five years. He then handed over the post of Minister of Defense to Prabowo Subianto on October 23, 2019. Previously, Ryamizard had repeatedly stated that he really knew Jokowi and Prabowo. Especially Prabowo, because both are in the same class at TNI, namely the class of 1974.
Ryamizard Ryacudu congratulated Prabowo Subianto, who was tasked with continuing his duties as Minister of Defense for the period 2019-2024. “I congratulate Prabowo, my friend, a level and a company together. Now I replace him, thank God, it is not much different,” said Ryamizard Ryacudu, on the sidelines of his farewell to the ranks of the Ministry of Defense.
Prabowo is also believed to be able to adapt to the Defense Ministry environment. “He (Prabowo) knows better, we are in a period of adjustment. I adapt everywhere, here I adapt in the Ministry of Defense, not that the Ministry of Defense has to adjust us,” he said.
