Mohammad Yousaf picks Pakistan greats after 1000th ODI

Former cricketer Mohammad Yousaf has chosen his greatest Pakistan cricketers after the 1000th ODI against Australia.

Yousuf shared the names on social media platform X and also paid tribute to Pakistan’s triumph in the 1992 World Cup.

“Pakistan’s historic 1000th ODI victory excites the greatest players,” Yousuf wrote.

The right-hander named 1992 World Cup winner captain Imran Khan as the greatest leader and all-rounder, followed by Wasim Akram, whom he described as the greatest fast bowler.

He picked Saeed Anwar as the biggest hitter alongside wicketkeeper Rashid Latif and spinner Saqlain Mushtaq. He also highlighted the 1992 World Cup final as the most memorable moment in the history of Pakistan cricket.

For the unversed, Pakistan made their 1000th ODI memorable with a thumping victory over Australia on Saturday at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The milestone made Pakistan the third men’s ODI cricket team to appear in 1,000 matches, joining Australia and India in the exclusive club.

Arafat Minhas starred with a record five wickets on debut, bundled out the visitors for just 202 in 42.3 overs.

With this performance, Minhas recorded the best bowling figures by a Pakistani on his ODI debut, surpassing a 41-year-old record previously held by former pacer Zakir Khan, who took 4-19 against New Zealand in 1984.

Chasing a modest target of 201, Pakistan reached 202-5 in 42.3 overs, largely thanks to a defining 127-run partnership between Babar Azam and keeper-batsman Ghazi Ghori.

Babar Azam top-scored with 69 off 94 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six. For his part, Ghazi Ghouri impressed with 65 off 92 deliveries, including eight fours.

With this victory, Pakistan took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, with the second match scheduled to be played in Lahore on June 2.
