PESHAWAR: Differences have emerged within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf parliamentary party in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly ahead of the provincial budget, creating a new challenge for Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.

The chief minister called a meeting of the parliamentary party on Sunday evening after receiving reports that lawmakers had started contacting each other amid growing dissatisfaction. All PTI members of the assembly were invited to attend the session.

Unease among party lawmakers was reported after the recent expansion of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa cabinet. The chief minister and other ministers contacted the disgruntled members and personally asked them to attend the meeting.

Before the official meeting, disgruntled PTI lawmakers reportedly planned their own consultative meeting. The emergence of a disgruntled group just before the budget has increased pressure on the chief minister, fearing that an independent stand of PTI members in the assembly could create difficulties for the government. A message was also sent to disgruntled lawmakers that any moves to disrupt the government could affect their chances of securing party lists in the next election.
