AUKUS Pillar II Fact Sheet: Unmanned Underwater Vehicles – Payloads and Activation Systems

AUKUS Pillar II Fact Sheet: Unmanned Underwater Vehicles – Payloads and Activation Systems

Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States have announced the first AUKUS Pillar II signature project, a state-of-the-art payload and activation system for Uncrewed Undersea Vehicles (UUVs) from AUKUS partners. The project, with delivery starting in 2027, focuses on the advanced technologies performed by UUVs and how they can effectively collaborate with AUKUS partners.

1. Undersea environment

The undersea environment is essential to the security and prosperity of AUKUS countries and supports global trade, defense and international security. This signature project will strengthen our lead in the increasingly competitive subsea domain.

2. What is the Signature Project doing?

The AUKUS Pillar II Signature project will provide UUV payloads and activation systems that can be used across each country’s UUV fleet. The AUKUS Pillar II signature project will:

AUKUS partners can work together to protect critical national undersea infrastructure, deploy state-of-the-art surveillance, reconnaissance and attack capabilities, logistics operations, and enhance superiority in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, mine countermeasures, electronic warfare and competitive littoral operations. Enhance AUKUS interoperability through key enabling elements including shared standards, tripartite operating concepts, and common control systems. To drive innovation, we leverage shared resources and a leading research and development community to develop and demonstrate capabilities through tripartite exercises and experiments.

This flagship project will strengthen our collective deterrence efforts and superiority in the maritime domain by accelerating the delivery of cutting-edge capabilities to our warfighters. This project strengthens existing AUKUS initiatives under Pillars I and II and strengthens the joint commitment of AUKUS partners to regional stability, security and freedom of navigation.

3. Delivery

AUKUS partners are taking a phased approach to delivery.

First, develop national payloads that can be interchanged and integrated in each partner country. The development of each country will focus on the different types of effects the payload will provide. AUKUS partners will then jointly develop and produce trilateral payloads and supporting technologies, including next-generation payloads. 4. Key concepts

Uncrewed Undersea Vehicle: An underwater vehicle that operates without a crew. UUVs can operate alongside manned ships and submarines, including:

Provide surveillance over large maritime areas Protect underwater infrastructure Support naval operations

Unmanned and underwater combat capabilities double the power of manned platforms and enhance the agility, asymmetry, and survivability of the warfighter.

Payloads: Systems that a vehicle carries to accomplish its mission, such as sensors, navigation, or attack capabilities.

Enabling System: A system that supports how a UUV operates, including sharing information and collaborating with other crew members and unmanned vehicles.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
