Donald Trump administration in talks to fund US drone companies

The Trump administration is in advanced talks to provide direct federal funding to a select group of U.S. drone manufacturers, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

According to the report, the deals, which are still being negotiated, come after months of discussions between a wide range of private drone companies and the Office of Strategic Capital.

Although the deals are still in the negotiation phase, the report notes that some could involve both debt and equity stakes and could lead to the U.S. government taking a stake in private companies.

People familiar with the matter said it would allow drone makers to increase production while lowering prices. The funding the United States would provide would not be used to purchase drones, sources added.

The two companies identified in the report are Performance Drone Works and Nero Technologies. Notably, Performance Drone Works counts the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., as a shareholder and advisory board member.

Notably, this report comes after the Pentagon revealed a $1.1 billion plan to mass produce 300,000 low-cost attack drones by the end of 2027.

Before Trump’s second term, the Pentagon accounted for less than 2% of all U.S. drone sales, a branch of the Defense Department reported. The announced plan is likely to change that and would be the strongest signal yet in favor of drone startup.

According to an estimate for 2025, the United States could manufacture around 100,000 drones per year. Ukraine, on the other hand, made four million last year, according to the WSJ.

To meet its goal of building an arsenal of 300,000 drones by 2027, the United States must significantly reduce manufacturing costs and increase production.
