New industry report: Putting sustainability at the core of the UK’s nuclear sector

New industry report: Putting sustainability at the core of the UK’s nuclear sector

The Next Generation Nuclear Industry Council (NGNIC) today released a new report titled Sustainability in the Nuclear Sector. This report sets out how the UK nuclear industry can strengthen its contribution to environmental, social and economic sustainability as the industry enters a new era of growth and investment.

The report argues that sustainability must become a strategic enabler for the nuclear sector. Beyond regulatory compliance and carbon reduction, we aim to build long-term public trust, stimulate investment, support local communities and deliver wider social value.

Developed through engagement with sustainability experts, senior leaders, government representatives, NGOs and industry stakeholders from the civil and defense nuclear sectors, the report identifies five priority areas for sector-specific action.

Clean energy and decarbonizationClimate resilience and adaptationTechnological culture, diversity and inclusion for all research and development

The report also calls for sustainability to be embedded in governance, design standards, operations and decision-making across the sector.

Commenting on the report findings, Arun Khuttan, Co-Chair of the Next Generation Nuclear Industry Council and Sustainability Manager at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, said:

“The nuclear sector has a unique opportunity to demonstrate leadership not only through providing safe, low-carbon energy and national security, but also through the wider environmental and social value it creates for communities and future generations. This report sets out how sustainability can be a consistent and value-added part of how the sector delivers now and into the future.”

Professor Pete Bryant, CEO of the World Nuclear Transport Institute and Professor at the University of Liverpool, who also wrote the report’s foreword, said:

“The UK nuclear sector stands at an exciting and critical moment. As new nuclear projects, SMRs, small reactors and innovation continue to advance, sustainability must be embedded at the core of the sector. This is not just about compliance, it is about reducing environmental impact, strengthening relationships with local communities and creating long-term social value with clean power.”

Additionally, Tom Greatrex, CEO of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:

“Nuclear energy and technology are essential to the world’s sustainable economic development. I welcome this new report from the Next Generation Nuclear Industry Council, which supports industry leadership on sustainability and highlights the role nuclear will play in providing clean, safe and reliable energy for the future.”

Chris Hocknell, director of sustainability consultancy Eight Versa, added:

“The case for broader sustainability across the nuclear sector is very clear. A decarbonized, abundant and competitive economy cannot run on renewables alone. Nuclear is the only low-carbon technology that can deliver the reliability and consistency at scale that modern economies demand. Now is the time to move beyond ‘green wishes’ and focus on building the most holistically sustainable technologies we have.”

The report highlights the growing momentum across the sector, including the integration of nuclear into sustainable finance frameworks and increasing investor interest in ESG performance. But it also identifies key challenges, including resource constraints, inconsistent reporting standards, cultural resistance and compliance-focused approaches that can limit wider sustainability progress.

The report’s recommendations include:

Strengthening cross-sector collaboration on sustainability priorities Stronger engagement with communities in decision-making Improved integration of sustainability into engineering, procurement and project delivery Better alignment of metrics, reporting and governance Increased investments in technology, innovation and climate resilience

The report emphasizes that sustainability should not be seen as an additional burden, but as an opportunity to strengthen business performance, improve resilience, support investment and build public trust in the nuclear sector.

This publication comes at a pivotal time for the UK nuclear energy industry, with major developments taking place across new construction, decommissioning, waste management, defence, fuel supply and new technologies.

King Lee, Head of Policy and Industry Engagement, added:

“Nuclear energy and technology are essential to the development of a global sustainable economy. I welcome the new report from the Next Generation Nuclear Industry Council and its focus on supporting industry leadership on sustainability.”
