Jacob Bethell: England all-rounder will return to England after suffering ‘left finger injury’ while playing in IPL | cricket news

Jacob Bethel, 22, is set to return to England after sustaining an injury to his left ring finger while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the ECB has confirmed.

The England all-rounder missed RCB’s IPL clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday, with the ECB explaining: “He will undergo a full assessment and monitoring by the England men’s medical team upon his return.”

His injury has cast doubt on whether Bethell will be available for England’s opening Test match of the summer against New Zealand at Lord’s on 4 June. The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, with the ECB adding that doctors will “determine his availability for the upcoming Tests”.

The ECB also confirmed that Bethell’s return agreement was reached in agreement with RCB, but did not elaborate further on the specific nature of the injury.

RCB, which finished the regular IPL season at the top of the table, is a favorite to advance to this year’s final on Saturday, May 31, four days before the match between England and New Zealand, and questions are beginning to be raised about its schedule.

The 22-year-old’s last match for RCB came on May 17 against Punjab Kings, where Bethell arrived at the crease to open the batting alongside Virat Kohli but was ultimately dismissed after making 11 off seven deliveries. RCB went on to win by 23 runs.

The all-rounder, who reportedly signed a £250,000 contract with RCB, has had a mixed season in the IPL. Notably, he was sent off five times against Gujarat Titans last month, and a week later he was sent off four times by Yadav Prince of Lucknow Super Giants.

Bethell struggled for game time in the early part of the IPL season. England’s number three batsman has been unused for RCB’s first six matches, with Sir Alaistair Cook urging the 22-year-old Warwickshire player to return home and play for his county.

“He’s not doing anything,” Cook said.

“Ideally that would open the door for him to come back and help England in Warwickshire.”

Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen hit back at Cook’s comments about X: “Alastair Cook has no idea what it’s like to be in the IPL. He has no idea what it’s like to be around the best players in the world all the time.”

Responding to Cook’s comments, Bethell told the Sky Cricket podcast: “I strongly believe this is what I need to do now.

“I feel better now than I did a month ago after the World Cup. Just spending time with the players here and being exposed to the pure standards of Indian cricket and the IPL has made me feel better.

“There are hundreds of eyes on you at every net session. Coaches and other players are looking at you and asking, ‘Is this guy okay? Isn’t he?’ There are people in the crowd with their phones on. You’re exposed to a lot of things.”

Speaking on the Sky Cricket podcast, Jacob Bethell said he would ‘like to solidify my place at three’ but would be willing to open the door in England if needed.

During this winter’s Ashes, Bethell revealed how he has improved as a cricketer while playing in the IPL. It came after he replaced Ollie Pope in England’s starting eleven for the Boxing Day Test before scoring 154 runs in two innings in the final Test at the SCG.

Bethell told the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast: “Once you are selected for the IPL, there is no withdrawal. My experience over the two months was that I was a much better cricketer than when I arrived.”

“I learn from Virat Kohli. [coach] Andy Flower and [team director] Mo Bobat. They even face unreliable net bowlers all the time. Conditions are different for each ground.

“I only played two games, but the lessons I learned from India’s cauldron and the IPL were invaluable.

“There were 50,000 people in Bengaluru and it feels like 150,000. I can’t say it feels the same. The MCG is definitely bigger, but I know what I can get out of myself at such times. I knew I could keep things the same at a big event.”
