Parts of England experienced heatwaves over the bank holiday weekend, with Monday expected to mark the hottest May on record.

Temperatures in London and the south-east of England are expected to reach 35°C, which is higher than the UK’s current May temperature record of 32.8°C.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Today will be the hottest day of May on record in the UK, with highs expected to reach 35 degrees.” “Records are usually only broken by a tenth of a degree, so this heat wave is unprecedented for the year.”

High temperatures between 30C and 34C are widely expected across the UK, with temperatures expected to continue until Tuesday, with temperatures reaching 35C again.

A heatwave has been officially declared in eight regions of south-east England, with temperatures reaching 27C for the third day in a row.

Yellow heat warnings are in place for the East Midlands, West Midlands, East England, London and the South East.

Officials have warned that hot weather could have serious impacts across health and social care services.

How long is the heat wave expected to last?

Temperatures were expected to start dropping on Tuesday, following a heatwave expected for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

But the Met Office now expects highs in London to reach 35C on Tuesday as well.

Afternoon highs are expected to reach 28C in south-west England and south Wales on Wednesday.

Onshore winds made it fresher in the east, but elsewhere it was very warm. It is generally dry, but a few showers are possible from time to time.
