Still no agreement to end the war between the United States and Iran; Trump says he’s in no ‘rush’

The United States and Iran have yet to sign a deal to end the four-month-old war, with President Donald Trump saying on Saturday he was in “no rush” to reach a deal.

Trump, in an interview with his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, on Fox News, said he was pushing for a deal that would ensure Iran never acquires nuclear weapons. And while he said he would prefer the deal to be completed quickly, he is not rushing the process. The president also threatened further military action if negotiations failed.

“I would like to say I’m in a hurry because gas prices are going to drop, but if you’re in a hurry, you’re not going to get a good deal,” Trump said. “And slowly but surely we’re getting, I think, what we want, and if we don’t get what we want, we’re going to end it in a different way.”

“We’re going to do a lot of things, [otherwise] we’re just going to go back and finish it militarily,” he said.

U.S. and Iranian negotiators have been working for weeks to reach an agreement that would end the conflict, while the war remains in a tenuous ceasefire. The conflict has wreaked havoc on global energy markets and pushed inflation to its highest level since May 2023 after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz when war broke out.

As of Sunday, U.S. gas prices averaged about $4.34 per gallon, according to AAA.

The strait carries around a fifth of the world’s oil and remains largely impassable.

Trump demanded that Iran agree to never acquire nuclear weapons and to immediately reopen the strait as part of any peace deal.

The president ended a White House meeting Friday without a decision on the deal, after saying he would make a “final decision” during the meeting.

Trump, according to an article in Axios on Saturday, requested changes to the proposed deal regarding the management of Iranian nuclear materials and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

In the Fox interview, Trump also said he added provisions to the deal prohibiting Iran from purchasing a nuclear weapon, in addition to development bans.
