St. Louis to host 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials

The first six athletes on Team USA for the 2028 Olympics will be determined in St. Louis.

The city will host the U.S. Olympic Trials for the men’s and women’s marathon on March 25, 2028, USA Track & Field announced Thursday. He was selected over Phoenix.

Three men and three women will qualify for Team USA at the trials, which will be the first selection event for an American sport before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, according to organizers.

The full route of the 26.2-mile race, which will be broadcast by NBC, will be broadcast in the coming months. Members of the local organizing committee said the race would begin at the University of Washington’s Francis Olympic Field, the primary venue used in the 1904 Olympics, and would include several loops of downtown before finishing at Energizer Park, home of the city’s MLS team.

St. Louis hosted the Olympic Women’s Marathon Trials in 2004. It also hosted the trials that determined the U.S. figure skating team for the Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina.

“As the first American Olympic city to host the 1904 Games, this Olympic legacy is really important to us,” said Marc Schreiber, chairman of the St. Louis Athletic Commission.

Running is booming in popularity and professionals are breaking records. Kenyan Sebastian Sawe became the first person to run a sub-two-hour marathon on an approved course during the London Marathon in April. Amateurs and professionals alike have benefited from technological advances that have led to faster shoes and better nutrition.

Because of the faster times, USA Track & Field lowered the time standard needed to qualify for the men’s marathon trials by two minutes, from 2:18:00 to 2:16:00, but it still expects about the same number of qualifiers as in 2024, said Ben Rosario, director of athlete experience for the St. Louis local organizing committee. (The women’s standard of 2:37:00 remains the same.)

“I think it was a reasonable and fair change, and I think it matched what was happening in terms of how fast people were running,” Rosario said. Currently, 134 men and 139 women have qualified for the 2028 events.

Last year, Conner Mantz ran 2:04:43 to break the 23-year-old American record. Emily Sisson set the American women’s record in 2022.

While the rest of the world is speeding up, the United States is catching up in world events. An American hasn’t won Olympic gold in the marathon since Frank Shorter in 1972, and Joan Benoit was the last American to do so in 1984. The last time an American won a medal in an Olympic marathon was in 2016, and 2021 brought the last medal to an American woman.

The men and women who will be part of the American team in St. Louis in 2028 will direct their preparation towards the Los Angeles Olympic marathon, which will begin in Venice Beach.
