David Lammy: I told JD Vance he was wrong about the Henry Nowak murder | crime

David Lammy says he told US Vice-President JD Vance that it was “wrong” to blame mass migration for the murder of British teenager Henry Nowak.

The deputy prime minister called Vance on Saturday to say “our democratic process is working well” and that the comments about the killings were wrong.

Lammy told Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips on Sky News that he told the vice president his posts were “unhelpful”.

Mr Lammy said: “This young man has been found guilty. An investigation into the police is ongoing by the Independent Police Complaints Authority. An investigation into Hampshire Police is underway by the Inquiry Unit.” [attorney general] Sentencing in this regard is being considered.

Marking the 82nd anniversary of the day Allied forces stormed the French beaches to liberate Nazi-occupied Europe in 1944, he said: “Sadly, today the beaches of Europe are stormed by different and dangerous ideologies… Beaches in Spain, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria. Boats and men arrive. When will European capitals do something about that invasion?”

Lammy was challenged over his response following the Black Lives Matter protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, saying “we must find a way to turn this righteous anger into meaningful reform.”

Lammy rejected the idea that anger was the right response to one death but not another. “Of course I am angry, upset and deeply saddened that this young man lost his human life. The color of his skin means nothing. He died a horrible death.” But he added that the “right response” is to look at “the behavior that flows from it.”

Asked by the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg whether she thought Vance was a racist, he said: “I reminded him that the family does not want division and calls for calm. I also reminded him of online spaces and how toxic they can be, so we had a lively conversation, a respectful conversation. We are still colleagues and friends.”

Asked whether he believed the police were institutionally racist, he said he believed Britain had “moved on from the era of institutional racism that was very real in the Stephen Lawrence era”, adding: “Personally, I don’t know if that’s an appropriate description today.”

Lammy said it was right to review police race guidelines. “If you look carefully at arrest data, prosecution data and conviction data, you can see examples of disparities related to black communities, Muslim communities, Gypsy Roma and Traveler communities,” he said. “It’s not all about racism. Some of it may be about socioeconomic background and other factors.
