Iran War Update: Trump says pilots OK after US helicopter crashes near Strait of Hormuz

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A U.S. military Apache attack helicopter crashed near the Strait of Hormuz, with President Donald Trump saying the two crew members on board were “fine” after the incident involving the strategic waterway, which remains under Iran’s grip.

The causes of the accident remained unclear Tuesday morning in the Middle East, which was still in shock after the exchange of fire between Iran and Israel the day before, the biggest blow ever to the tense ceasefire in the Iran war. Iranian state media, relying on foreign reporting, acknowledged the accident without providing further details.

Since the United States and Israel began striking Iran on Feb. 28, the war has shaken the global economy, driven up energy prices around the world and made many basic goods, including food, more expensive. The authorities have failed to transform the April ceasefire into an agreement definitively ending the conflict.

Trump, speaking to reporters at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport after watching the NBA Finals Monday night, acknowledged the accident.

“The pilots are fine. Yeah,” Trump said. “No one was injured. We will issue a report tomorrow. But the pilots are fine.”

The New York Times first reported that a US military Apache attack helicopter had crashed near the strait under unclear circumstances. U.S. Army Central Command and the Department of Defense did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.

Apache helicopters have been a key asset for the US military as it imposes a blockade on Iranian crude oil shipments and tankers, seeking to pressure Tehran into a deal. The helicopters were also used by the UAE to shoot down Iranian drones during the Iran War.

Trump insists Iran deal is imminent

Trump also expressed renewed optimism about negotiations with Iran.

“We have a good chance” of signing a deal in “two or three days,” Trump said. He did not provide details on the reasons for the new optimism.

“We are on the verge of a very, very good, strong and powerful agreement,” the president said. “If we bomb – which we could do very easily if we wanted to, and we spend another two or three weeks bombing – they won’t have anything left at all. But the strait won’t be open for months.”

He added: “If we bomb, you know, a lot of people are going to be killed. Who wants to do that? I don’t.”

Mediators, led mainly by Pakistan, have been trying for weeks to reach an agreement. However, Iran and the United States have taken a hard line.

The United States wants Iran to give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which is believed to still be buried in the country after U.S. airstrikes during the 12-day war in 2025. But Iran refuses that and demands sanctions relief. He also wants the release of frozen assets even before a final deal is reached, something Trump has rejected.
