‘London cuisine’: Why Britain can’t stand the heat When will we adapt? | Business and economic news
LONDON, England – It was supposed to be a gathering of the great and the good to discuss climate change. The meeting held in central London on Wednesday was part of London Climate Action Week, titled ‘Heatwave’. It was canceled because it was too hot.
If the organizers were embarrassed, at least they could say they were right.

June temperature records were broken in some areas at 36.1 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit).
The past few days have revealed that Britain is structurally and culturally unsuited to heat.
“London is not just making the calls, it is cooking,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Electrical group AO World announced that air conditioner sales increased 420% compared to the previous year. Other suppliers say they are out of stock.
Automotive group RAC said there were 20 per cent more calls for broken down vehicles than usual as vehicles succumbed to the weather.
But there are also negative effects on the economy.
Rajeev Shaunak, head of consumer at business advisory MHA, said: “Historically, heat waves in the UK have triggered spending on categories related to food, drink and garden furniture, as we saw during the hot summers of 2018 and 2022.
“However, spending patterns appear to change in 2026 depending on how much the mercury rises. While warm weather used to be a guaranteed bonus for retailers, continued extreme heat could have the opposite effect.”
An ice cream seller told Al Jazeera on Thursday that fewer people are leaving their homes or offices during the heatwave, while a chef said they are taking extra care to ensure food does not expire.
Houses in the UK are generally designed to retain heat during the winter. Some new homes have this feature so much that they easily overheat in the summer.
Professor Rory Jones, University of Reading, said: “While some households may be able to invest in cooling, older adults, low-income families, single-parent families, and renters often face the greatest barriers to protection from extreme heat. Therefore, those most at risk from extreme heat are often the least able to afford to protect themselves from heat.”

On Wednesday alone, 2,600 rail services were canceled or delayed. Direct sunlight heats the tracks, increasing the risk of derailment. Therefore, many commuters were unable to go to the office.
More than 1,000 schools and daycare centers were closed.
The heat was more than just uncomfortable.
Students may return home from seething classrooms, but the elderly in nursing homes cannot.
The famous heat wave of 1976 had 15 days with temperatures above 32C (90F). In the UK those temperatures aren’t that strange anymore.
According to government statistics, the 2022 heat wave killed 3,000 people, most of them over 65 years old. Deaths in nursing homes and residential facilities have soared. The numbers are unlikely to improve this time either.
Prime Minister-elect: “We must act”
While some people enjoyed the sun, sipping a cold beer and enjoying an ice cream, the impact of the heat wave has caused greater concern for the UK.
Campaigners say warnings of a heat wave have been loud for years but successive governments and many big businesses have done nothing about it, adding to the gloomy feeling about a country that regularly changes prime ministers and where big infrastructure projects such as the development of the innovative high-speed rail network HS2 rail network struggle to reach a good conclusion.

Greenpeace says we need an “extreme heat plan” that goes far beyond the tame advice to drink more water and funds heat-proof schools, hospitals and homes.
Angharad Hopkinson, political campaigner at Greenpeace UK, said: “The summer of ’76 may have faded into the nation’s memory, but an even more dire heat wave is fast approaching. The next Prime Minister must act on the evidence out the window and the advice of his scientific advisers and stay the course on climate policy.”

Even if fossil fuels have nothing to do with rising temperatures, as some believe, few would argue that the weather is not getting warmer.
The red weather warning issued for London on Wednesday – the second time this warning level has been issued – has been extended. The Met Office warning indicating a risk to life will now remain in place until Friday night.
Sales of fans and air conditioning units have soared, but campaigners say this is not enough even for families who can afford them.
According to the Climate Change Committee, nine in 10 UK properties are not designed to withstand future summer heat, with summer highs of 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) set to become normal by 2050.
(Al Jazeera)
As for transport, London Underground has not introduced new air-conditioned trains since 2017. Busy trains during commute times can be miserable.
Some people say there have always been heat waves in England. But the figures show the situation is now worse and more regular. Over the past 50 years, global average temperatures have increased by 1°C (1.8F). In southern England, temperatures range between 3C and 4C (5.4-7.2F).
Britain’s coping capabilities appear to be stretched at best.
