The third heatwave of the year is set to hit the UK this weekend, with temperatures expected to rise as high as 34C.

Health warnings came into effect for a week from midday in parts of England, with the Met Office warning that high temperatures later this week could pose a greater risk to the lives of vulnerable people.

Forecasters said southern temperatures could reach 29 degrees on Sunday, then approach the low 30s next week and reach a high of 34 degrees on Thursday or Friday.

But while the country reels after June’s record-breaking heat wave, the next heatwave promises to be much more pleasant as humidity levels remain low.

The heat wave also does not affect the whole of the UK, with southern and south-east England mainly affected.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: “It won’t be that hot or humid so it won’t be that uncomfortable and it won’t have that much of an impact. It won’t affect the whole of the UK either.”

After a hot June, this year’s summer temperatures continue to get warmer (PA).

Highs of 28C are expected in southeast England on Saturday, with temperatures across the south remaining above 20C.

Further north, temperatures are around the mid-teens, and once you get to Scotland, the temperature drops only slightly, with the mercury hovering around 16-17C in the mid-teens.

Sunday will be hotter than this weekend, with highs in London expected to reach 29C. The heat will continue to build into next week as highs on Monday could reach 31C.

Mild and hot temperatures are expected across the UK on Saturday. The highest temperature in London is 28C (Met Office). The highest temperature in London on Sunday is expected to be 29C (Met Office). The mercury is set to soar to 31C on Monday afternoon (Met Office).

The UK Health and Safety Executive (UKHSA) has issued a yellow heatwave warning for the east, south-east and south-west of England, including London and the West Midlands, from noon on Saturday until 8pm on July 11.

While the south will enjoy sunny weather this weekend, western Scotland is expected to be very wet, especially the western and north-western Highlands, where there is a risk of more than 100mm of rain by the end of the week, Mr McGivern said.

Sunday morning will see more wet weather across a wide swath of the north-west, with heavy rain expected to fall across Scotland, northern England, the Pennines, Lake District and parts of Northern Ireland.

The big differences from place to place are due to “an emerging area of high pressure extending over the Azores, nestled close to the south and south-west over the weekend”, a Met Office meteorologist said.

He added: “The westerly airflow over the top of those highlands will bring a frontal system into Scotland and that front will ebb and flow. This will bring a lot of clouds, strong winds and persistent heavy rainfall.”

Meanwhile, Southern Water has issued a hosepipe pan for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight from 12.01am on July 10.

Southern Water said on its website: “The warmest spring on record, followed by record heatwaves, has left river levels 25 per cent lower than expected for this time of year.”

River Test added that a third of its water had been lost in the last month, “putting pressure on our ability to treat and deliver water”.

Southern Water said the hosepipe ban would be lifted “as soon as possible”, adding: “This can only happen if there is enough water in reservoirs, rivers and underground aquifers to meet demand.”

South East Water’s temporary hosepipe ban for people living in Kent came into effect on Friday.
