UK weather: Third heat wave of the year begins, but how different will it be?

The third heatwave of the year has begun across the UK, with temperatures expected to rise as high as 34C in some areas by mid-week.

This heat wave is unlikely to be as extreme as the one that reached a high of 37.7 degrees in late June, but it is expected to last longer.

A Public Health England yellow heatwave warning has been issued for the Midlands and southern England until 20:00 GMT on 11 July.

UKHSA suggests that minor impacts are expected across health and social care services, with greater risks to the lives of vulnerable people.

Northern England will warm up, but clouds and rain are likely to persist, especially in western Scotland.

Temperatures in the Midlands, East Anglia and south-east England could rise to 31C on Monday afternoon.

With temperatures expected to exceed 28C, official heatwave criteria will be broadly met for these regions over the next few days.

The heatwave will then become more severe from mid-week, with temperatures in eastern England and Wales falling into the low 20s to low 30s.

However, in London and southeast England, temperatures could peak at around 34C on Wednesday and Thursday.

Temperatures are unlikely to reach the 37.7 degrees recorded in late June, but some weather forecast models are predicting temperatures in the mid to upper 30s are likely this week.

The UK’s all-time temperature record of 40.3C was set in Coningsby, Lincolnshire, in July 2022.
