Nigel Farage accused of ‘acts of desperation’ after quitting UK parliament amid financial probe | Nigel Farage
“I’ve never been more angry,” said Nigel Farage, with a stunning view of the City of London next to the Union Jack flag. The leader of Reform UK, a right-wing anti-immigration party that still leads in most national opinion polls but has seen a recent decline, said he would no longer tolerate this in a speech titled “A statement on my future in public life.” “Now it appears the agency has decided they can’t beat us fairly and have decided to use corrupt means,” Farage said.
He was referring to the Guardian’s revelations that he received an undeclared £5 million gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne, and recent allegations (not denied) that Farage received undeclared funds for his staff, security and housing from convicted criminal and Gloucester-born aristocrat George Cottrell.
Parliament is investigating whether a £5 million gift given to Farage within 12 months of him becoming an MP in the summer of 2024 could reasonably be considered by others to be related to his “parliamentary or political activities” and therefore requires a declaration. He denies it. There is pressure on authorities to investigate Cottrell’s funds for the same reason.
But this kind of examination of evidence by independent experts was not at all Farage’s preferred solution, and it did happen. Instead, Farage was due to resign as councilor for Claxon, a faded seaside town in Essex, and seek re-election. “I have decided that the people of Clacton will be the judge of my actions,” he said. “This election will be a showdown between the people and vested interests.”

Farage, a public school-educated son of stockbroker Guy Justus Oscar Farage, often played this card. Presenting yourself as the little man’s tribune. For most of his political career, Farage’s message has been that he is the only politician willing to provoke Brussels and fight back against the EU’s intrusive tentacles.
As elites, they destroyed Britain’s fishing industry by giving foreigners rights to British waters. They imposed an alien European metric system (kilograms, grams, liters, meters), threatening Britain’s traditional methods of measurement (pounds, ounces, pints, yards). He argued that it was globalist forces that wanted Britain to remain in the EU. Farage said he was the conscience of working men and women.

When the UK voted to leave the EU in a 2016 referendum by 52% to 48%, Farage’s New View Men and Women were again the people above who messed up Brexit and the immigrants taking advantage of Britain’s “open borders”. Farage has argued in recent months that “the rights and privileges of white people are less important than the rights and privileges of ethnic minorities” and predicted that recent racially motivated riots could be “just the beginning.”
Will Farage’s latest strategy work? This by-election means that the National Assembly investigation into undeclared funds will be temporarily suspended. This move allowed him to buy himself some time. Meanwhile, national opinion polls show Reform comfortably ahead of the rest. He beat Claxon two years ago with 46.2% of the vote. The Conservative Party accounted for 27.9%, the Labor Party 16.2%, and the Liberal Democrats 4.4%. There is little doubt that Farage will win comfortably again.

If a subsequent parliamentary inquiry uncovers the allegations against Farage, the worst sanction for him could be another by-election if 10% of constituencies sign the petition. If he won the first election, would there be any appetite for a second by-election? Does he limit the damage by forcing the issue now? maybe. But much will depend on whether Farage, undoubtedly a skilled communicator, can convince not only Claxon but the British public that this is not just a cynical ruse.
Farage was quick to cut off one line of attack by offering to cover the costs of the by-election. But other political parties were not slow to condemn Farage’s announcement, calling it what Keir Starmer described as a “act of desperation”.
“It’s clear why he does what he does,” the prime minister said. “He’s being vulgar. Politics should be about improving the lives of millions of people, not about hiding personal interests or questionable donations. I think the public will know exactly what this is about.”
The ruling Labor Party, the Conservative Party’s official opposition party, other rival parties including the Lib Dems and Restoration Party, and the Lib Dems and Restore, a reform-right party founded by former reformist MP Rupert Lowe, were all excluded from the by-election.
“We will not be participating over the summer in a reform-backed media circus designed to inflate Farage’s ego and distract from entirely fair questions about why he concealed such massive and erratic financial donations,” Lowe said.
Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said his party was “calling on all political parties to step aside and refuse to give oxygen to Farage’s vanity project”. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said his party would not take part in any by-election triggered as a result of a “standard inquiry into Nigel Farage’s questionable finances”.
Perhaps the greatest risk is the most serious to his prospects. Farage may end up looking ridiculous. British politics often features candidates telling election jokes. It was once the Monster Raving Loony party that drew crowds by adding a bit of levity to the late-night poll numbers. These days, all kinds of by-elections are attracting attention.
In a statement Tuesday afternoon, comedian Jon Harvey, also known as Count Beanface, proposed running as a unifying force. “Labour, Conservatives, Lib Dems and Greens: We demand you step down from Clacton,” Count Binface wrote. “I will be a unity candidate and I will pledge to build at least one affordable home. Nigel Farage has said he wants the people versus the establishment. Go for it. Leave him to me.”
