Government approves UK’s second largest solar farm

Families and businesses will benefit more from solar power, one of the cheapest forms of electricity, after the government approved major new solar power projects today (Wednesday 8 July).

One Earth Solar Farm is set to become the second largest solar farm in the UK. According to the developer, the plant could power 200,000 homes a year, equivalent to half of Lincolnshire’s homes.

The decision comes just a week after approving the Peartree Hill solar farm and Dean Moor solar farm, the 30th nationally significant clean energy project approved by the government since July 2024. This is enough clean energy to power more than 19 million homes.

Global instability, from Ukraine to the war in Iran, has exposed the costs of Britain’s dependence on fossil fuel markets over which it has no control. Solar is one of the cheapest forms of power available to the country and is central to the government’s clean power mission to bring stability and lower rates in an uncertain world.

The only way to ensure energy security is to take a growth-friendly approach to building more clean energy in the UK. Over the past two years, this government has been doing just that.

It follows the government last week confirming new planning reforms to abolish mandatory pre-application consultation requirements for major infrastructure projects. This will shave up to 12 months off the planning process and potentially save the industry £1 billion this Parliament. These changes, delivered through the landmark Planning and Infrastructure Act, are due to come into effect later this month.

This also shows 2025 was the strongest year on record for solar deployments, with 269,000 installations completed across the UK, according to government data released last month.

After obtaining consent, the developer can proceed to the next stages of the project, including meeting the planning requirements attached to the pre-construction order.

The decision follows a rigorous planning process that considered the impact on local communities, land use and the environment as solar farms occupy a small proportion of agricultural land, while strengthening the UK’s energy security.
