US military denies involvement after explosions heard in Iran | US-Israeli war against Iran
Explosions were heard in various parts of Iran, according to semi-official state media, while US military officials denied involvement in further attacks.
Multiple explosions were heard Thursday evening in areas around Bushehr – home to one of Iran’s nuclear power plants – and in the neighboring town of Choghadak, the Mehr news agency reported.
Three other explosions were heard in the southern town of Konarak, the statement added.
Shortly after, US Central Command (CENTCOM) told Al Jazeera that the US military had not carried out any strikes in Iran in the past few hours.
The United States and Iran have been trading attacks since Tuesday, with Tehran also striking military sites in the Gulf, including Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, further straining the fragile ceasefire agreement reached in mid-June.
Mehr did not provide further details on the cause of the explosions, damage or casualties. The agency also denied an earlier report of an explosion in the southern city of Bandar Abbas.
Bushehr Deputy Governor for Political and Security Affairs Ehsan Jahanian told state media IRNA that the explosion in the city was caused by air defense systems.
Jahanian added that a military headquarters on the outskirts of Bushehr was hit by what he described as a projectile.
The war “not over”
Shortly after the reports from Iran, Israeli Benjamin Netanyahu said he had a phone call with US President Donald Trump “during which they agreed to continue coordination between the countries in different areas”, according to a statement released by the prime minister’s office.
Trump updated Netanyahu on “US movements in the Gulf,” he adds.
Earlier Thursday, during an air force graduation ceremony at Hatzerim Air Base in southern Israel, Netanyahu said: “The [Iran] the war is not over. There are new challenges.”
“Maintaining air superiority is a fundamental pillar of Israel’s national security doctrine. It is the key to preserving stability in a turbulent Middle East,” he said, according to the daily Yedioth Ahronoth.
Israel’s army chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, also said the military campaign against Iran was “not over.”
“New projects are on the drawing board. Major operations still await us. Be ready,” he said in a brief speech.
Israel’s defense minister said Israel was ready to attack Iran if necessary.
“The military is ready and on alert for a resumption of fighting, to regain air superiority and strike Iran again, to eliminate threats, including a third time if necessary,” Israel Katz said at the air base ceremony.
Disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz
The latest round of tit-for-tat strikes follows Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz earlier in the week. Ships including from Qatar and Saudi Arabia have been hit while passing through this narrow waterway, following a route closer to the Omani side of the strait.
Iran insists that all ships must pass near the Iranian coast. Members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) issued a joint statement condemning the attacks, both on ships and on the territory of Gulf countries.
At the heart of the dispute are two different designs on how to move forward: Trump wants a quick resumption of traffic across the Strait to ease energy prices before key midterm elections, while Iran refuses any measures that could reduce its control over traffic there.
The attacks on the ships drew a harsh response from Trump, who called Iranian leaders “scum”, adding that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was “finished”. However, neither side has formally withdrawn.
Trump added that he might allow peace talks to continue for now, leaving the process uncertain. Washington also removed a waiver on Iranian oil exports – a lifeline for the Iranian economy.
Although this is not the first time they have exchanged fire, there are growing fears that the two countries could intensify their attacks, dragging the region into a wider war.
This comes as technical negotiations with negotiators were suspended to allow for the funeral of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of the Israeli-US war on February 28. It is unclear whether negotiations will resume on Monday, as was planned before the latest attacks.
