We are still in a heatwave. Could we have another heat wave next week?

These thresholds vary between counties, reflecting the fact that unusually hot weather in one part of the UK may be different in another.

This means that heat waves are not simply based on any one hot day or even the highest temperature in the UK. It depends on location and time period. A heat wave can bring temperatures well above average, but it only becomes a heat wave if the relevant local thresholds are met for three or more days.

Are we technically still in a heat wave situation?

The answer depends on where you are. Most of England and parts of Wales continue to record higher-than-normal highs, with temperatures expected to reach around 30°C in south-east England on Saturday.

However, the heat is not uniform across the UK. By Sunday, temperatures are expected to drop to the mid-20s in the south and mid-teens in the north, marking a brief respite from recent heat.

According to Met Office definitions, a current heat spell in an area will end when temperatures fall below the relevant local heat wave threshold. If temperatures then rise again and meet the criteria for three consecutive days, it is considered a new heat wave rather than a continuation of the previous heat wave.

Heat wave conditions can be described as localized, when a small area or a small number of locations meet or exceed a threshold. When the threshold is met over a larger area, such as multiple counties, a widespread heat wave occurs.

This distinction is important for current predictions. While some areas, particularly the south and south-east, may continue to see very warm or locally hot weather for some time, other parts of the UK are already experiencing, or are expected to see, cooler and more variable weather.

A cooler interlude on Sunday

Sunday looks set to bring a noticeable change. Rain and showers are expected across many areas, with temperatures near or slightly below average. The largest temperature changes on Sunday compared to Friday and Saturday will be in Wales and northern, central and eastern England. Sunday night will then be slightly cooler than recent nights, with temperatures dropping into the single digits in many places.

For many, this will feel like a change after recent hot weather. It is also important from a heat wave definition perspective because the 3-day threshold must be maintained locally for heat wave conditions to persist.

Could there be another cold wave next week?

There are signs that temperatures will rise again early next week. By mid-week, temperatures across the South and Southeast will likely return to at least the mid-20s, with very warm to hot temperatures.

Another heat wave could be recorded if temperatures rise enough to meet the local threshold for three consecutive days. So far in 2026, three heat waves have occurred in May, June, and July. If temperatures fall below the heat wave threshold before rising again, any additional qualifying spells will potentially be counted separately as a fourth heat wave.

But isolated high temperatures are not enough. If only one or two stations reach the heat wave criteria, it is not defined as a heat wave.
