Sign our Give Me Five petition calling on Boris Johnson to end child poverty

The Daily Mirror calls on readers to sign a petition to end child poverty as part of an historic campaign.

Our Give Me Five campaign is pushing for a 5% increase in family allowances to lift 200,000 young people out of poverty.

We also demand that the government reintroduce child tax credits, remove the two-child limit and set the benefit limit.

More than 1,500 people have already supported our call for family allowances to be increased by 5, within 24 hours of the creation of the petition.

This increase would give families an additional 340 families per year on average.

The Mirror spoke to parents who live in inadequate housing and who are struggling on a daily basis.

Katarina Taaru, 36, lives with her two daughters, ages six and nine, in a small, cold, damp room in Reading.

She said: We do everything here – we sleep here, we cook here, everything is done in this room. There is nowhere else to call home.

You are not calling a rooming house, you are calling a house or a flat house. For two years, I have not felt at home.

We are stuck in this room 24/7. There's no privacy. The kids grew up seeing mom go to the bathroom and get dressed while they were there.

It's like a prison for me.

Katarina – who has a degree in accounting and finance – is a caregiver with an agency on a zero hour contract and sometimes finds work in finance.

She receives universal credit, but payments vary depending on her job.

Mom pays 356 a month in rent but feels trapped in a system where you have no way out.

She only plans 20 foods a week to feed herself and her daughters and says there are times when all she can afford is a loaf of bread.

The Mirror also spoke to 25-year-old Hannah Hawkins of Middlesbrough, who spends days without eating because she can't afford to eat.

She lives with her son Bodhi, two, and survives on a benefit income which, worryingly, leaves her below the poverty line.

Bodhi was not planned and, although Hannah is still in a relationship with her father, the couple does not live together and he is currently unemployed and can only offer coup stroke.

Hannah's income is less than her expenses

She worked full time at a bank, but says that due to child care expenses, she cannot return to work until Bodhi is three years old and is eligible for a free crèche place.

Hannah's benefits do not cover her expenses and she only scratchs thanks to her family and friends.

Alison Garnham, executive director of the Child Poverty Action Group, said: "The Mirror is booming when it says we need to reinvest in family benefits.

"An additional five pounds per week per child would make a big difference for the families that are struggling the most.

TUC Secretary General Frances OGrady added: I urge politicians from all parties to support the Mirrors campaign. Child poverty is a stain on the conscience of our nations. It needs to be repaired urgently.

Judith Cavanagh, coordinator of End Child Poverty, also supported the Mirror campaign, saying that young people could be lifted out of misery during this Parliament with bold policies such as increasing family allowances.
