Knights Ferry News 14-7-21 – Oakdal Leader

Jim McCarthy’s garage adjacent to the church caught fire on Friday afternoon, and an army of community members scrambled to work until the fire department arrived and was ready to fight the blaze. James Turner, the Feichters, Tom and Mike Wright, Eric Sinkevich, and Brent Noon Sr. Rick Maisel, Don from the camp, and Ed Fortune helped Jim’s son, Sean McCarthy fight the fire with garden hoses, and Bryce Hobbs ran to the local fire department for help. When the fire brigades arrived, local firefighters set up hoses while Cal Fire created a defensible space. Soon, at least 30 other firefighters arrived from Modesto to help with the blaze. In the end, Jim’s garage is badly damaged but Jim is safe! Thank you to everyone who helped in any way to contain the fire and protect our town!

While this incident has been somewhat contained, some locals now see the city’s need to consider the cost of owning a fire hose that can be connected to a fire hydrant. Consider attending your next fire protection meeting to see what we can do to better protect our city. Finally, this was a great testament to how important it is to have 24/7 firefighters in Knights Ferry and as a city we need to continue encouraging our tax budget to continue prioritizing funding for our Rural Fire Department!

I’m sure everyone in the area felt it but we had an earthquake! Most of the houses in Knights Ferry are very old, I know our house was built before internal plumbing and there are houses that were built before our house in town. The earthquake shook our homes well. Creamery’s Heather Furtman said she was serving some out-of-state clients at the time of the earthquake. I bet it confirmed the country’s reputation as an earthquake country! He may be a Californian inside of me, but I’ll have these little earthquakes above a hurricane any day.
