One person died in a powerful earthquake that hits the island of Crete in Greece

ATHENS (Reuters) – A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 shook the Greek island of Crete on Monday, killing one person when the dome of a church collapsed, authorities said.

Greek seismologist Efthimios Lykas described the earthquake, which drove people out of their homes and public buildings and caused extensive damage, as a “thunderbolt” with strong aftershocks.

A police official said a man died when the dome of a church in the town of Arkaluchori collapsed during renovations. Civil protection authorities said nine people were injured in the quake, which destroyed several buildings.

The earthquake prompted many people in the main city of Heraklion in Crete to rush outdoors. Schoolchildren were asked to leave their classrooms and congregate in schoolyards and town squares.

“It felt strong and it lasted several seconds,” a local mayor told Sky TV.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.8 and its epicenter was 23 km northwest of Arvi in ​​the southeast of Crete at a depth of 10 km.

Earlier, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said the quake had a magnitude of 6.5, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) said it was 6.0.
