A minor earthquake shakes Lake Michigan near the Wisconsin-Illinois border

WISCONSIN (CBS 58) – A minor earthquake was recorded Wednesday afternoon in Lake Michigan near the Wisconsin-Illinois border.

According to the USGS, the 2.9 magnitude earthquake occurred at 2:38 p.m. about 20 kilometers east-northeast of Kenilworth, Illinois, about 15 miles offshore of Wisconsin.

While earthquakes are uncommon in the Midwest, they are not unheard of.

The largest known earthquake associated with Wisconsin occurred on May 6, 1947, near Milwaukee and Lake Michigan. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was felt across much of southeastern Wisconsin, from Sheboygan to the Illinois border and west toward Waukesha. It shook buildings and windows, causing minor damage and leading some Milwaukee residents to believe an explosion had occurred. No injuries were reported.

A later USGS analysis estimated that the 1947 earthquake had a magnitude of about 3.8.

The USGS also points out that the official Wisconsin earthquake catalog contains only three earthquakes recorded within the state below magnitude 2, and that some of the reported seismic events in the area were actually blast or freeze-up, also known as frost quakes.
