According to the State Department of Health and Human Services, North Carolina has seen more influenza activity than ever since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in March 2020.
“It’s easy to forget because everyone is focused on COVID,” said an epidemiologist at Gillings Global Public Health School at UNC Chapel Hill.
So far, one person has died of the flu in North Carolina this year. This is an adult in the western part of the state. The person was positive for the flu, but negative for COVID-19, said DHHS announced his death. No other information about the individual, such as name, place of origin, county, gender, age, etc., is disclosed. This is a state policy to protect the privacy of the deceased.
“This is a sad thing that reminds us that influenza is a serious illness that can lead to complications and even death,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Zack Moore.

On average, about 300 people die of the flu in North Carolina each year. In contrast, since March 2020, COVID-19 has killed more than 19,000 people in the state. Influenza infections are most common from late fall to early spring, with activity usually peaking in January or February.
