Qikiqtarjuaq is the latest settlement in the Nunavut Territory where COVID-19 was detected, with five communities reporting the disease since December 20th.
A case was confirmed in Qikiqtarjuaq, a settlement of about 650 people north of Baffin Island, announced in a news release on Tuesday by Dr. Michael Patterson, director of public health in Nunavut.
There are 37 active cases of respiratory illness throughout the region, released. There are 20 in Iqaluit, 5 in Pangnirtung, 10 in Rankin Inlet, 1 in Sanirajak and 1 in Qikiqtarjuaq. The Nunavut Territory government reported 20 active cases on Monday and eight on Friday.
“The more communities affected by COVID-19, the greater the pressure on our healthcare system,” says Patterson.
Due to the infrastructure and limited resources of the Nunavut Territory, he said it would be “difficult” for the Nunavut Territory to manage multiple outbreaks at the same time.
The stricter public health rules imposed by Patterson last week-putting the territory in another blockade-are in force until at least January 7. Travel restrictions are set for Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet and Pangnirtung. Round-trip trips to these communities are restricted for their essential purpose and for those who return to their home communities or return to southern Canada.
Patterson and Premier PJ Akiagok will provide up-to-date information on the COVID-19 situation in the region at 11:00 am on Wednesday.
