Wristband “Zapper” may help mild Tourette’s syndrome

“I think we have come up with a relatively cheap, safe and effective technology that can control tics in people with Tourette’s syndrome,” Nottingham.
A tic is an unconscious movement, a sound that clears the throat, blinks, and even vows related to disability. Researchers say a technique called brain oscillations helps suppress rhythmic electrical brain activity associated with tics.

Jackson’s team tested the approach on 19 people with Tourette’s syndrome who wore a dedicated wristband.
Participants were randomly given a constant electrical pulse for 1 minute on the right wrist for 1 minute with no stimulation.
The researchers found that the stimulus reduced tic, and also the urge to tic. Participants with the worst tics had the greatest benefit.
And the stimulus had a cumulative effect, Jackson said. The more you use it, the greater the benefit.
The need for this type of treatment is very important, he said.
Many parents don’t want their children to take it, as the drug therapy used to treat Tourette has side effects and only works in about half of patients, Jackson said. Another treatment, involving implantation of electrodes in the brain, is a surgical procedure with its own short-term and long-term risks. And he said behavioral therapy can be difficult to obtain.
Jackson and his team are planning a larger trial with the goal of developing a wristband that can be activated whenever a patient feels a tic has come.
Dr. Alessandro di Rocco, director of the Movement Disability Program at Northwell Health in Great Neck, NY, reviewed the findings.
“This is an exciting study with interesting rationale and promising preliminary clinical data,” he said, pointing out the devastating effects of tics on a person’s personal and psychological well-being.
In recent years, more and more evidence has linked abnormal patterns of brain activity to behavioral impulses associated with tics, Dirocco said.
This has led to attempts to coordinate abnormal patterns with brain stimulation techniques, including invasive surgical interventions such as deep brain stimulation.
“There is evidence that these techniques may work, but neurosurgical interventions can cause potentially serious complications, while other forms of external stimulation require expensive settings. And can only be administered at the clinic,” Dirocco said.
He said that this portable, easy-to-use device for stimulating the median nerve of the wrist could interfere with abnormal brain activity and reduce ticks with less risk and side effects.
