The latest Japan earthquake brings back memories of the events of September 11th. Was it an aftershock?

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake in northeastern Japan late Wednesday hit an area still recovering from the devastation of the Great East Japan Earthquake and its ensuing tsunami and nuclear disaster.

But are the two earthquakes related? And if not, was this earthquake a harbinger of a larger earthquake in the near future, as was the case when a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Tohoku region two days before the massive earthquake on March 11, 2011?

At least three people were killed and dozens injured in Wednesday night’s quake, with a quake measuring 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. A smaller earthquake of record 5 weak occurred 2 minutes before the larger shock.

Authorities issued a tsunami warning for waves up to a meter in height in the two prefectures, but the actual waves were only 30 centimeters higher than normal in some areas.

There’s no way to know if it’s a harbinger of a larger earthquake, says Masaaki Nakamura, a seismologist with the Meteorological Agency, calling on people to be wary of a possible earthquake of the same scale for about a week or so. In the previous cases.

During a press conference in the early hours of Thursday morning in the Tohoku region, Nakamura explained that the Pacific plate moving from the east is descending the North American plate along the boundary known as the Japan Trench.

What’s different about the March 2011 quakes, Nakamura said, is that Wednesday’s quake did not occur directly at the plate boundary and was relatively deep, 57 kilometers below the surface. The epicenter of the 2011 earthquake occurred on the border and was shallower at about 24 km.

“It’s a different kind,” he said.

A strong earthquake occurred at roughly the same location about a year ago, on February 13, 2021, and the Meteorological Agency says there may be a connection between the two earthquakes, which occurred in the same area as the March 2011 earthquakes, Nakamura. He said. Initially, the Meteorological Agency said the February 2021 earthquake may have been a follow-up to the March 2011 earthquake, but after a decade, the agency said it had become difficult to determine any association.

In 2019, the State Seismological Commission said there is a 60% to 70% chance of an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 to 7.5 on the Richter scale within the next 30 years in the Pacific Plate in the region extending from the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture to Aomori Prefecture.

Another earthquake expert provided a conflicting view of Wednesday’s earthquake, seeing it as a follow-up to the March 2011 earthquake that was smaller due to its deeper epicenter.

“Overall, it’s an aftermath of the 2011 earthquake,” said Manabu Takahashi, a specially appointed professor at Ritsumeikan University’s Research Center for Pan-Pacific Civilization. “Because it occurred at a depth of 57 kilometers more than it did in 2011, fortunately it did not cause a massive tsunami.”

Although the Pacific plate was the direct cause of Wednesday’s earthquake, Takahashi said, it also caused a domino effect on the southern Philippine sea plate, which could trigger a large-scale earthquake that would affect Tokyo, western Japan and Okinawa.

“The Japanese archipelago is in a dangerous state, whether it’s volcanoes or earthquakes,” Takahashi said.
