Several areas in Hubei province experienced “severe convective weather” on Monday, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
“Thunderstorms and strong winds swept through” towns including Huangshi and Huanggang, killing eight people, he added.
Tornadoes were reported in some areas and nine people were missing.
The “bad weather” injured 275 people on Tuesday morning in Huangzhou district of Huanggang, the official Xinhua news agency reported, without giving details of their severity.
Authorities also evacuated 408 residents to safe areas, the statement added.
“Rescue and relief efforts are underway,” Xinhua said.
Heavy rain and severe flooding from Typhoon Maysak killed at least two people in the southern Guangxi region and prompted authorities to evacuate at least 48,000 people Monday evening.
Authorities in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, have taken the emergency flood control response to the highest level after torrential rains breached dams.
Rain burst the walls of a reservoir dam, with dramatic video shared by CCTV showing a torrent of muddy water rushing over the collapsed concrete.
Houses and cars elsewhere in the area were partially submerged, it was reported.
Rescuers wore life jackets and helmets, while others were on inflatable boats searching for people.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping has called for “all-out” rescue operations, state media reported Tuesday.
Xi stressed “the need to make every effort to organize emergency relief operations, treat the injured and resettle affected residents, and effectively carry out disaster prevention and relief work,” state broadcaster CCTV said.
Scientists warn that the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events globally will increase as the planet continues to warm due to fossil fuel emissions.
China is the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, but it is also a global renewable energy powerhouse that aims to make its economy massively carbon neutral by 2060.

Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
