UK earthquake: 5.1-magnitude earthquake shakes parts of Britain, causing homes to ‘shake’

Great earthquake hit Scotland

Parts of the UK were shaken this morning by a 5.1 earthquake.

People reported that their homes were “rumbling” for minutes as people felt the earthquake in parts of northern Scotland.

It was reported to have occurred at 5.23am off the northeastern coast of Shetland Island.

It has been felt in Shetland, Aberdeen, Elon, Stonehaven, Helmsdale, Inverery, Lerg, Huntley, Banff and Fraserburg, according to the British Geological Survey.

She said reports described: “laying on the bed and hearing a low roar”, “three waves of vibration in about three seconds”, “wake me up when windows vibrate”, “bed shaking and windows creaking”, “mirror shaking”. and “I felt it as I heard it, enough to wake me up.”

More than 70 members of the public reported the quake, which was said to last about two minutes, according to the US Geological Survey.

There are approximately 200-300 earthquakes in Britain each year, but the vast majority of earthquakes are so small that no one notices them.

However, it is between 20-30 more than 2.0 degrees which can be felt over a wider area.

Ryan Thompson, who lives in Shetland, said he woke up to something that sounded like a “low-flying jet”.

“At first I woke up to a sound very similar to a very low jet or very loud thunder, and it wasn’t until I saw the light shadow moving that I clicked that this could be a small earthquake,” he said.

“There wasn’t a lot of movement here, I think other parts of Shetland felt that more, but the noise was very loud and very disturbing.

“Earthquakes are very rare, of course, but they are not unheard of here in Shetland.

“There was one about five years ago in a similar place, but that was definitely the loudest and clearest I’ve seen in Shetland.”

Earthquakes in Scotland are often attributed to ice rebound.

Until about 10,500 years ago, much of the northern UK was covered by a thick layer of ice – pushing the rocks down into the underlying mantle.

These rocks have been slowly rising since the ice melted, causing occasional earthquakes in the process.
