Pope’s trip to L’Aquila raises questions about papal resignations
VATICAN CITY (CNS) – When the Vatican announced that Pope Francis would travel to L’Aquila in central Italy on August 28 to inaugurate a seven-century-old celebration of tolerance, people on social media began speculating that the pope would resign.
The 85-year-old pope will make his morning trip to L’Aquila just a day after the Cardinal’s stay scheduled to create 21 new cardinals and the day before a two-day meeting with cardinals to discuss the reform of the Roman Curia, one of the major projects of the papacy.
The Vatican said the trip includes, on June 4, a mass in the square outside the medieval Basilica of Santa Maria di Colemaggio on the city’s edge. The cathedral is the burial place of Saint Celestine V, a 13th-century pope who abdicated just a few months after his election.
When Pope Benedict XVI visited at the time in 2009, he placed the long wool pallium he wore during installation mass over Pope Celestine’s glass casket as a gift. When Pope Benedict resigned in 2013, many people questioned whether that gesture four years ago was a sign.
But Cardinal Giuseppe Petrucci of L’Aquila, announcing Pope Francis’ visit on the diocese’s website, focused only on the celebration of the Celestine pardon and Pope Francis’ concern for parishioners still recovering from the 2009 earthquake in which nearly 300 people lost their lives.
Pope Francis is also scheduled to visit L’Aquila Cathedral, which remains closed to the public due to earthquake damage, and meet the families of those who died.
The cardinal said the pope’s visit is a sign of his love “for our church and our city, which is all the more valuable when we take into account his pressing pastoral obligations and some agonizing health problems.”
At the heart of Celestine’s Pardon, celebrated annually from August 28-29, is the granting of general indulgence to everyone who visits Colmaggio Cathedral, goes to confession, receives mass, and prays for the Pope’s intentions. Pope Celestine held the celebration in 1294.
Cardinal Petrucci wrote: “Pope Francis will be the first pope to open the Holy Door in 728 years.”
