Japan earthquake: GMA issues warning of more aftershocks after quake injures six

Earthquakes have hit some areas of Japan in recent days. This prompted the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a warning for more aftershocks in the coming days and week, raising fears of a possible major earthquake waiting to happen at an unspecified time.

The warning came after six people were injured when a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, on the afternoon of Sunday, June 19.

The earthquake also caused property or infrastructure damage.

Meanwhile, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake hit the same area on Monday morning, June 20, but no injuries were reported.

The recent earthquake highlights a pattern of possible seismic activity across the country that could continue and produce aftershocks or other earthquakes, not only next week but also in the next several months.

The JMA, along with a government panel made up of seismologists, has issued a nationwide earthquake warning within an unspecified period of time, extending to the end of June or the coming months.

However, similar tremors could still occur in the coming hours and days as part of the warning forecast of a short-term earthquake.

Committee Chairman Naoshi Hirata, a professor at the University of Tokyo, said there is no sign or any indication that the earthquakes will stop in the next several months, Kyodo News reported.

Furthermore, the JMA is warning people in the affected area to remain vigilant as more earthquakes of around 6.0 or less are possible within the week-long time frame.

The first earthquake occurred at 3:08 p.m. local time on Sunday, while the weaker earthquake of the second occurred at 10:31 a.m. on Monday.

Both seismic eruptions were felt collectively in the cities of Noto, Nanao and Wajima, according to local media The Asahi Shimbun.

There were reports of injuries to people from Suzu and Noto, one of whom was a child under the age of 10.

Infrastructure damage was also reported at Noto Satoyama Airport in Wajima after cracks were seen in the wall of the facility.

In addition, windows were shattered at Ishikawa Prefecture Ida High School in Suzu, suspending the class.
