DORAL, Fla. – Nearly two weeks after devastating earthquakes struck Venezuela, relief efforts continued in South Florida on Monday.

Volunteers at the Global Empowerment Mission in Doral unloaded trucks, buses and vans filled with donations of vital supplies for those in need.

Earlier Monday, groups like ProKel Mobility and Latinos in Transit were in Kendall to load one of those buses to send to GEM.

“So, our relationship is to at least give them some peace where their families are receiving the basics so they can do what they do best, which is transporting people, transporting goods so that the building of the country can begin,” said Lina Aragon, of Latinas in Transit.

“I’ve been really affected by the whole situation. Just understanding how our community members, some of whom have TPS or have some pending immigration cases, are going through this stress here locally and then having to worry about a family member who died or trying to survive because they were able to get out of these buildings that collapsed,” said Christian Mancera Mejia, with the Miami-Dade Community Council.

Meanwhile, in Miami, city and county officials teamed up with the Miami Marlins to collect supplies at LoanDepot Park.

The trip will last for at least a week from 9am to 5pm

Fans are also encouraged to contribute items on game days.

“In addition to delivering here until 5 p.m., we will also be accepting donations at the gates for Marlins games this week and welcome the community to come out to support Venezuela,” said Caroline O’Connor, Marlins chief business officer.

“We will get them to the right people,” Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins said. “We all know there is a regime in Venezuela that we cannot trust, but we are working with our State Department to make sure supplies get where they need to go.”

“It’s very important that everyone comes out for the Venezuelan people,” Miami-Dade Commissioner Vicki Lopez said.

“There is nothing more important than being there for your brothers and sisters, and since we have so many of them living in Miami-Dade, it makes sense for the entire community to cater to whatever you can do, because a lot of people ask me, ‘What can I do?’ ‘Well, here’s your chance to act,’” she said. “Bring whatever supplies are on the list.”
