Taliban demands help after earthquake kills 1,000 in Afghanistan

Stripped of aid and international alliances, the Taliban are struggling to respond to Afghanistan’s deadliest earthquake in two decades.

The 5.9-magnitude earthquake occurred early Wednesday morning, 28 miles southwest of the city of Khost. The BBC reported that earthquakes were felt in the Afghan capital, Kabul, and in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad. But the worst damage occurred in Afghanistan’s mountainous Paktika province, where up to 1,800 homes were destroyed, according to the United Nations. All in all, the state news agency estimated that more than 1,000 people had died and thousands had been injured.

Since taking power about ten months ago, the Taliban government has not faced a catastrophe of this magnitude.

The Associated Press reports that the Taliban’s supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhundzadeh, has rarely appeared in public to appeal to international organizations “to help the Afghan people affected by this great tragedy and spare no effort.”

“The government is working within its capabilities,” senior Taliban official Anas Haqqani said on Twitter on Wednesday. “We hope that the international community and relief agencies will help our people in this difficult situation.”

The Washington Post reported that Bilal Karimi, another spokesman for the Taliban government, wrote on Twitter a call for aid agencies to send teams to the area.

Before the Taliban seized power, foreign aid funded 75% of the previous government’s budget, according to the New York Times.

Several international aid organizations withdrew from Afghanistan last year, after US and NATO forces withdrew and left the country in Taliban hands. Earthquakes are common across Afghanistan — they kill 560 people there each year, on average, according to the United Nations — but this is the deadliest in recent memory.

“Because of the mountainous region, there are rockslides and landslides that we won’t know about until much later,” Robert Sanders, a USGS seismologist, told the Associated Press. “It’s possible that old buildings will collapse and fail.” “Given how dense the region is in that part of the world, we’ve seen in the past similar earthquakes causing significant damage.”

Several news reports said the United Nations and Pakistani aid agencies are currently working on the ground to respond to the earthquake.

“We have people on the ground distributing blankets and hygiene kits. We have several mobile health and nutrition teams on their way to provide first aid to the injured,” Samantha Mort, UNICEF Chief of Communications in Afghanistan, told NPR.

“This is a very poor category of the population with high unemployment rates and the worst drought in 37 years,” she added.

The United Nations estimates that 95% of Afghans do not get enough to eat. The economic crisis has displaced more than a million people from their homes.

It is not known how many people are trapped under the rubble or stranded in rural areas without access to hospitals. The United Nations expects the death toll to rise.
