The devastation caused by the June 22, 2022 earthquake in Afghanistan’s Paktika Province has been enormous. Some entire villages were destroyed; In some societies, entire families died. There were other losses, too: from livestock, livelihoods, and a lot of hope for the future. But even amid all this, Secunder Kermani found Afghan hospitality unaffected.

In recent weeks, Texas has been the scene of a horrific mass death – which received somewhat different media treatment. Will Grant covered both the aftermath of the Ovaldi school shooting, which killed ten-year-olds and their teachers; and the most silent response to the discovery of the bodies of 53 people — presumed to be Central American migrants who suffocated while being smuggled into the United States — in a pickup truck in San Antonio.
