Outbreak of monkeypox declared as a public health emergency

Monkeypox has been declared a public health emergency by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

“The more sexual partners you have and the more intimate contact you have, the more likely you are to come into contact with monkeypox or HIV or anything else that can be transmitted through intimate contact,” Gastaldo said. Dr. Gastaldo, however, stresses that monkeypox is not a sexually transmitted disease but is transmitted through close human contact.

Even if you are not eligible for the monkeypox vaccine, there are various ways to ensure your safety. Many of these are like practices in place to protect you from COVID-19.

“Outside communities of men having sex with men, there are some spillover infections. It’s risk exposure,” said Dr. Gastaldo.

Dr. Gastaldo says people with monkeypox should isolate themselves, cover the affected area, use their own bathroom, and isolate clothing and bedding.
