A year ago, on July 5, the strongest earthquake in 20 years struck near Ridgecrest in California. The area is still feeling vibrating today. Ridgecrest is more than 170 miles from Palm Springs, but vibration was still notable here. In fact, people in Sacramento, to Phoenix, Arizona, and down through Baja California, Mexico felt the earthquake.

Dr. Lucy Jones is a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology. Explains that the Coachella Valley will feel a greater jolt due to the proximity of the San Andreas Fault. We need to be prepared for blackouts, broken water pipes, and the inability to leave the area. Jones said, “When you are in Palm Springs, you have San Andreas next to you and this is not an emerging error, and this is a very sophisticated error, which means that it is capable of causing greater earthquakes.”

Taban Sharifi, from News 3, visited Ridgecrest to see what the residents had suffered over the past year and whether the damage was still in place. A small store manager, Mike Caston, told us about his experience. He said: “The bottles start shaking, the whole store starts shaking, the shelves, everything is coming down, the glass is breaking.” He said that his shop completely destroyed in a matter of minutes.
